Adoption Expectations

Adopting a pet is a long-term commitment. Our goal is to ensure every animal is placed in a safe, loving, and permanent home where both the pet and adopter can thrive.

Effective Date: June 2026 | Last Updated: June 2026

Our Commitment

Pawstive Place Rescue is committed to finding responsible, lifelong homes for the animals in our care. We strive to make thoughtful matches based on the needs of both the animal and prospective adopter.

Adoption Is a Lifetime Commitment

  • Pets require daily care, attention, and companionship.
  • Adopters should be prepared for a commitment that may last many years.
  • Animals rely on their families for food, shelter, exercise, healthcare, and love.
  • Life changes can occur, but adopting should never be considered a temporary arrangement.

Financial Responsibility

Pet ownership involves ongoing expenses that may include:

  • Food and treats
  • Routine veterinary care
  • Vaccinations
  • Heartworm and flea prevention
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Training and enrichment
  • Grooming and supplies

Adopters should carefully consider whether they are financially prepared to provide for a pet throughout its life.

Safe & Humane Care

  • Pets should be treated with kindness, patience, and respect.
  • Animals should receive appropriate exercise and socialization.
  • Adequate food, water, shelter, and medical care must always be provided.
  • Pets should never be neglected, abandoned, or mistreated.
  • Local laws and ordinances regarding pet ownership should be followed.

Introducing a New Pet

  • Allow time for adjustment and decompression.
  • Introduce family members and existing pets gradually.
  • Establish routines and boundaries early.
  • Provide patience during the transition period.
  • Understand that behavioral adjustment may take weeks or months.

Housing Considerations

  • Renters should obtain landlord approval before adopting.
  • Pet restrictions, breed restrictions, and size limits should be verified in advance.
  • All household members should support the adoption decision.
  • Pets should not be adopted as surprises or gifts without careful planning.

Training & Behavior

  • Training requires consistency, patience, and commitment.
  • Positive reinforcement methods are strongly encouraged.
  • Behavioral challenges should be addressed proactively.
  • Professional training assistance may be beneficial when needed.

If Circumstances Change

We understand that life circumstances may change unexpectedly. If an adopter is no longer able to care for an adopted animal, we encourage them to contact Pawsitive Place Rescue for guidance and assistance whenever possible.

We want to help prevent pets from entering unsafe situations or shelters.

Adoption Process

  • Submit an adoption application.
  • Application review and reference verification.
  • Additional questions or interviews when appropriate.
  • Meet-and-greet opportunities when applicable.
  • Final adoption approval and placement.

Hold Harmless and Release of Liability

I acknowledge that animals are unpredictable by nature and may exhibit behaviors that could result in injury or property damage. By adopting an animal from Pawsitive Place Rescue, I assume all risks associated with ownership and care of the animal and agree to release, indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Pawsitive Place Rescue, its officers, directors, volunteers, agents, and representatives from any and all claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses arising out of or related to my adoption, ownership, possession, care, or control of the animal.

Acknowledgement

By submitting an adoption application, applicants acknowledge that they have reviewed these Adoption Expectations and understand the responsibilities associated with providing lifelong care for a companion animal.
